Overview

This project involved relocating the water main for Fripp Island Public Service via a Subaqueous Horizontal Directional Drill to service Hunting Island and Fripp Island, SC. Earth View drilled 3,700 LF of 10” FPVC 110LF underneath the Harbor River, which is located in an environmentally sensitive marsh. To date, this is one of the longest, successful drills using fusible PVC performed by an HDD contractor. This project was located on the side of a major highway system which proved challenging when it came to setting up and arranging the drill and subsequent materials. In response, EV built-up a platform with crane mats, fill material, and rock to support 120,000+ lbs of equipment. EV utilized the Gyro guidance system for the pilot hole and the work was performed using the American Auger DD-440T.

The island was able to maintain water service without interruption during bridge construction.

To date, this is one of the longest, successful drills using fusible PVC performed by an HDD contractor.

Problems EV solved

Trenchless drilling

As a national leader in the trenchless drilling industry, Earth View tailored our approach to complete the project effectively and efficiently, while making it one of the longest, successful PVC drills to date.

Sensitive environmental work

The entry and exits pits of the drill were located adjacent to existing wetland areas which involved a detailed plan for drilling and handling mud extraction and spoils from the excavations. The project was successfully completed with no environmental issues.
